Hey y’all, and welcome to our new patrons! Thanks for joining us in supporting in our work to remain a strong and steady news source that produces hard-hitting news, critical analysis of local issues, and embodies media reparations while ✨ free of corporate influence ✨Ahhhh believe me when I say, it feels so good. I’m really grateful today.
This episode will be going out later this week, but you all are getting it early. It begins with my thoughts on municipal elections and candidates (I’m stunned some people have asked) plus a reading of a previously published feature by contributor Christopher Luke, “How the Atlanta Police Department spends its money.”
I think this story is absolutely vital when considering local politics in Atlanta, because the false narrative that our public safety is contingent on more policing is one that’s been running since police departments were founded in this country. It’s a tale as old as time, but Chris’s feature brings us more up-to-date numbers, while I tack on updates from this past year. APD’s budget is now the highest it’s ever been.
